COUNCIL BLUFFS SCHOOLS FOUNDATION AWARDS OVER $30,000 IN CLASSROOM GRANTS FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Donations from community partners and individuals poured into the Council Bluffs Schools Foundation this year in support of the children, families, and staff of the Council Bluffs Community School District. Because of their generosity, the Council Bluffs Schools Foundation was able to, for the second consecutive year, award over $30,000 in classroom grants for 47 projects.

Each year, the Council Bluffs Schools Foundation partners with the Council Bluffs Community School District to provide classroom grants. Classroom grants provide certified staff with a grant of up to $1,000 for materials that enhance learning in the classroom. Classroom grants are designed to promote innovation in the classroom and support teachers with creative ideas to improve teaching and learning.

Teachers from across the district submitted grant requests, large and small, to enhance learning in their classroom. From flexible seating options, to incubators for hatching baby chicks, the classroom grant requests ran the gamut.

“It’s exciting and rewarding to review grant applications,” says Chris LaFerla, Executive Director. “This year, grant requests ranged from $175 to $1,000. One grant application I found particularly neat was a submission by a history teacher at Kirn. Her request included costume items to be worn by her students in an effort to immerse them in the history lesson. Our teachers are creative and engaging, and classroom grants allow them the freedom to try new things.”

The Council Bluffs Schools Foundation awarded 47 classroom grants this year for a total of $30,805.

“Classroom Grants from our Foundation have enhanced our classrooms and the learning environment for many years,” Superintendent Dr. Vickie Murillo said. “This year, the awards are even more meaningful and demonstrate our community’s investment and appreciation for the important work that happens every day in our classrooms. I look forward to seeing the positive  impact of these classroom grants.”

"The classroom grants program allows teachers and staff to bring their creative ideas to life," said  Ashley Kruse, Board of Directors President. "Thanks to our generous donors for demonstrating their commitment to our schools, staff, and students by making classroom grants possible."
